Inclusive Preschools and Childcare
En Español Print This Page

“Inclusion, as a value, supports the right of all children, regardless of abilities, to participate actively in natural settings within their communities.” This is the view of the Division for Early Childhood (DEC). How can we make this possible for children with disabilities? How can they participate in all aspects of life to the best of their abilities? It involves removing physical and social barriers and providing supports.

In the United States, federal law supports inclusion. Key is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504, and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Requirements. Research shows that outcomes for children with disabilities can be greatly improved if instructors modify and adapt instruction in the classroom. They also improve if there is effective collaboration among parents, teachers, and specialists. Inclusion benefits not only the child with a disability. It benefits all children in the classroom. Inclusion promotes compassion, empathy, and awareness.
