Celebrate the Spirit of the World Summer Special Olympics Games
Just because you aren't in Athens, doesn't mean you can't cheer on the more than 7,000 Special Olympians from around the world! Tune in and watch the opening and closing ceremonies and bring a little bit of Greece into your home. Below are some tips to celebrate worldwide friendship and ability with your family:
- Bookmark ESPN3.com who is the exclusive media home for the opening (Saturday, June 25, 1 – 4 p.m. EST) and closing ceremonies (Monday, July 4, 1 - 4 p.m. EST).
- Huddle around the computer or if you have access to a portable projector plug it into a laptop and show the broadcast on a blank wall or a white sheet works great too! This is a fun way to make it a movie date!
- Dress the part! Go Grecian with a family toga night. Have fun, there isn't any right or wrong way—grab sheets, bath towels or even toilet paper. Snap a photo upload it to AbilityPath's Facebook page! We give the toilet paper about 10 seconds to last so take your photos quickly!
- Make your own Flame of Hope. Empty Paper towel or toilet paper rolls work great as a base, and then cut out flames with orange, yellow and/or red construction paper. Glue the flames all around the top portion of the empty rolls. Not only is this fun and the kids can carry their flames alongside the Special Olympians but it is building fine motor skills too!
- Make Greek treats! Some easy recipes to incorporate: 1.) Greek Yogurt with blueberries or your favorite fruit. 2.) Spanakopita (spinach and feta triangles)-you can make them but why? Several grocery stores have them in the frozen section where appetizers are located. 3.) Greek Salad: Tomatoes, cucumber and crumbled feta cheese drizzled with some olive oil and a dash of oregano 4.) Have a Greek pizza party toppings can include feta cheese, olives, an assortment of veggies and shredded rotisserie chicken.
- Most importantly celebrate the achievements of the athletes and cheer for them loud and proud!
We would love to see how you are celebrating. Send photos to info@abilitypath.org or post onto our Facebook page>
